We believe this painting to be by John Henry Robinson (1796-1871) English. A portrait of a gentleman named James Saunders (1776-1853). Inscribed on the back in old English script on the original backing paper was written:
“James Saunders Died June 10th, 1853
Aged 77 Years”
14. Upper Belgrave Place
That text was later written on new paper backing covering the old script as well. Our research finds a John Henry Robinson Esq. RA residing at 14 Upper Belgrave Place in during that time as listed in the 1823 “Transactions of the Society, Instituted at London for The Encouragement of Arts” he was listed as an annual patron. The artist was also listed in the 1842 “The Royal Court Guide, and Fashionable Directory” residing at Belgrave Place.
As you can see from the detailed photos, the painting surface is not perfectly square and has a slight cutoff in the lower left corner, appearing to be bone panel. No signature is seen on front, painting has not been removed from frame or backing for further inspection.
