Extraordinary, Old Oceanic tribal art sculpture from the Sepik River region

This piece was very skillfully carved from a single large section of wood and carefully painted with natural pigments according to tribal traditions. Note: There are Baga snakes in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY

This comes from a massive collection of antiquities owned by a private collector including many tribal, African, Native American, and Mexican Folk Art pieces we have included in this auction. Collector resided in Australia for many years and acquired a lot of pieces from Papa New Guinea while starting his collection in the mid 20th century.
